Defence Fuel Transformation Program

CLIENT | An Australian Petroleum Refinery

ISSUE | The client was seeking to be selected as the industry partner to support the Department of Defence to deliver a secure Defence Fuels Network under Defence’s Fuel Transformation Program.

WHAT | TG Public Affairs formulated an advocacy strategy that sought to highlight the importance of Australian sovereignty when selecting a Defence Fuel partner. Working closely with the Department of Defence and key ministers, TG Public Affairs facilitated discussions in line with the strategy and formulated advocacy strategies to ensure the company was well-positioned to win the fuel tender.

OUTCOME | Despite early risks being identified during the Tender process and significant hurdles within the process, TG Public Affairs was able to convince Government stakeholders of the national security risks and the Australian industry benefits of selecting an Australian refinery. The company successfully won the contract to become the industry partner for Defence Fuel Network.

Parliamentary Committee Hearing

CLIENT | A Major Australian Infrastructure Company

ISSUE | Considerable political and media interest became focused on a significant metropolitan precinct development, resulting in a public Parliamentary Committee process being initiated. The client was one of the key developers of the site, and while the inquiry was a blatantly political exercise, real potential existed for them to suffer collateral reputational damage.

WHAT | TG Public Affairs provided the client with a full background to the inquiry and the motivations and perspectives of individual Committee members.  TG Public Affairs staff also worked with the client to anticipate likely lines of questioning, develop appropriate responses and conducted a full ‘dress rehearsal’, getting their representative familiar with the pressures of the environment.

OUTCOME | The senior executive involved comfortably handled all questions from committee members, satisfying them of the company’s bona fides, the appropriateness of their actions and entrenching their reputation as a good corporate citizen.

Introduction of a Patent Box

CLIENT | Biotechnology Company

ISSUE | Australia’s high corporate tax rates and absence of any compensating incentive has led to a significant diminishment of Australian pharmaceutical, medical technology and biotechnology capacity, with many Australian organisations choosing to shift their commercialisation offshore.

WHAT | Working closely with the client to establish the Australian Medical Manufacturing Exporters Coalition, TG Public Affairs coordinated with Treasury, the Department of Finance, relevant ministers and policymakers to develop policy that supports local advanced manufacturing and onshore capability.

OUTCOME | In May 2021, the Australian Government introduced a ‘Patent Box’ system for Biotechnology and Medical Technology companies, providing a concessional corporate tax rate of 17%.
